Language Arts Syllabus

· Literature Units: Students will read and analyze various forms of literature. Units of study will include informational text, folktales, tall tales and legends, poetry, and biographies and autobiographies. Primary resource for study is Pathways to Adventure a Harcourt collection of literature.
· Language Arts: Grammar, mechanics, and usage will be taught in seven language units. The language arts textbook used for study is McGraw-Hill: Language Arts Today. After each lesson, students will complete a study guide. This will provide an excellent review for study. A language arts quiz will be given every Thursday. Daily Oral Language (DOL) is completed each day to reinforce all language studies. With DOL, students rewrite sentences posted on the board correcting errors as they write. Three of the week’s DOL sentences will be included on Friday’s spelling test.
· Writing: Writing assignments will be included with each literature unit. Also, students have the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas in journal writing. I read and add comments to each students journal entries. However, journal writing is not for a grade, but for personal expression only. For other writing assignments, students will use the writing process. At times, writing assignments are for a grade. Students will know ahead of time if the writing assignment is for a grade.
· Spelling: A list of twenty spelling words will be given each Monday. Spelling test will be given on Fridays.
· Book Reports: Students are to complete one book report each month. See the book report schedule for more information.
· Homework: Homework will be given every Monday. Homework should only take about 20 minutes to complete. Assignments are meant to reinforce what was discussed in class as well as help students develop good study habits.
